The Biggest Wedding Planning Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Planning a wedding is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot. There are suppliers to book, decisions to make, budgets to manage and an endless stream of emails to keep on top of!
And while there is no such thing as a perfectly planned wedding, there are a few common wedding planning mistakes I see, as a wedding planner covering Cambridgeshire and beyond, couples make time and time again.
The good news? Most of them are completely avoidable.
Whether you're planning a wedding in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk or further afield, here are some of the biggest wedding planning mistakes (and how to avoid them) to watch out for.
7 Wedding Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Booking your venue before working out your priorities
Underestimating how much time wedding planning takes
Booking suppliers based purely on price
Forgetting about the guest experience
Trying to do everything yourselves
Leaving the logistics until the last minute
Not having someone to manage the wedding day
Booking your venue before working out your priorities
Your venue is one of the biggest decisions you'll make, so it's tempting to fall in love with somewhere and book it straight away.
But before you do, think about your guest numbers, budget, preferred date and the overall feel you want for your wedding.
A beautiful venue isn't necessarily the right venue if it doesn't work for the wedding you're planning!
Underestimating how much time wedding planning takes
This is probably one of the biggest wedding planning mistakes.
At the beginning, it can feel like you have loads of time. Then suddenly you're six months out and there are still suppliers to book, menus to choose, guest details to confirm and approximately 742 emails sitting in your inbox.
Wedding planning can easily become a part-time job, particularly when you're already working full-time and have a busy social life.
Be realistic about how much time you can actually dedicate to it.
Booking suppliers based purely on price
This is a wedding planning mistake I often see.
Your budget matters, of course, but choosing suppliers solely because they're the cheapest option can sometimes cost you more in the long run.
Look at their experience, reviews, communication, style and exactly what is included.
You want a team of suppliers who understand what you're trying to create and who you can trust to deliver it.
Forgetting about the guest experience
It's easy to get caught up in how everything looks, but your guests will remember how the wedding felt.
Think about the flow of the day, how easy it is to get between locations, whether there are enough places to sit, how long guests are waiting between parts of the day and whether everyone knows what's happening.
The little practical details can make a huge difference.
Trying to do everything yourselves
I completely understand wanting to be involved in your wedding. In fact, I think you should be.
But there's a difference between being involved and having to manage every single detail. So avoid this wedding planning mistake.
If you're spending your wedding morning answering supplier calls, checking deliveries or wondering whether the candles have arrived, you're not really getting to enjoy the day you've spent so long planning.
Leaving the logistics until the last minute
This is where the less glamorous side of wedding planning becomes incredibly important.
Who is setting everything up? Who is packing everything away? Where does the rubbish go? Who is directing suppliers? Who is looking after gifts and personal items?
These things don't magically sort themselves out on the day.
So, a wedding planning mistake to avoid is not leaving everything until the last minute!
Having a clear plan for the logistics well before your wedding means everyone knows what they're doing.
Not having someone to manage the wedding day
You can have the most detailed spreadsheet in the world, but someone still needs to actually run the day.
Your suppliers should be focused on doing their jobs, your family and friends should be enjoying themselves, and you should be getting married.
Having a wedding planner there to oversee the timings, coordinate suppliers and quietly deal with anything unexpected means you can be fully present.
